NHL Franchise History
Team History and Name Origin
The Arizona Coyotes, formerly known as the Phoenix Coyotes, have made 44 playoff appearances in their franchise history, which spans from 1979-80 to 2023-24. The team was originally named the Winnipeg Jets, and played in that city from 1979 to 1996. In 1996, the team relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, and was renamed the Phoenix Coyotes. In 2014, the team was purchased by new ownership and renamed the Arizona Coyotes.
The Coyotes' name is derived from the predatory canine that roams the southwestern desert. The name was chosen in a name-the-team contest, and was selected from over 14,000 entries.
The Coyotes have had a number of successful seasons in their history. They won the Presidents' Trophy in 2011-12, and have made it to the playoffs in each of the past four seasons. The Coyotes are hoping to continue their success in the years to come.
