Nassau, Bahamas - June 28, 2023

A 58-year-old woman from the United States was fatally attacked by a shark while paddleboarding off the coast of Green Cay, in the northern Bahamas, on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time when the woman was in approximately six feet of water.

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the victim was identified as Carrie Joy Smith of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She was in the Bahamas on vacation with her family.

Witnesses reported seeing the woman being attacked by a large shark, believed to be a bull shark. They immediately called for help, and authorities arrived on the scene to assist.
